Punctuality is Good for You
by Mike Corthell
Punctuality is the characteristic of being able to finish a required assignment or fulfill an obligation before or at a previously-designated time.
Punctuality. The English are known to be punctual. But not all of us are English. Some of us are punctual and some of us aren't. Either we end up sleeping in and are late for work, or we just don't feel like getting up early to get to work on time. Sometimes the traffic could be the culprit. For some of us, if that's the case, we'll make sure that we set our alarm clock a few minutes early so that we can make it to work on time. Others, even though they know that the traffic might be bad, choose not to get up any earlier than their usual time, thus making them late for work.
Punctuality in the workplace means a lot more than being on time for a social event. You can be fashionably late at a social event, but you cannot be fashionably late at the workplace. To the company, punctuality means money well spent. The company is paying their employees to start work at a specific time. and they expect their employees to show up at that scheduled time without missing a minute. If one or more employees show up late for work in the morning the manager will have to think twice about relying on those employees for certain projects.
Of course, there are exceptions, like having a doctor's appointment or being sick. But not being punctual on a repeated basis will aggravate the relationship between manager and employee and the people you work with. If an employee is not punctual, either it's a late arrival at a meeting or late arrival in the morning, the manager automatically will think that this employee is not reliable. If there is a project with a deadline, the manager will look for someone who is punctual to finish that project. He is not going to risk giving it to the person who is not punctual. Thus he knows that the project will be done and done on time.
When an employee is punctual in the workplace, this lets everyone know that this employee is reliable. You can depend on this employee .You can rely on this employee to finish all the projects that he is assigned. Nothing that a manager will give to this employee will fall through the cracks. Therefore, this employee gains the respect of his manager, colleagues and the company. This may mean a raise and maybe promotion.
