There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear LizaThere's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, there's a hole.
Then fix it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry
Then fix it, dear Henry, dear Henry, fix it. (watch)
If the foundation be destroyed what can the righteous do? Psalm 11:3
You may remember that children’s song that shows the absurdity of circular reasoning. My mom used to sing it with us in our old station wagon anytime the trip became too long for her brood of five. I can remember thinking as a young child that perhaps Liza should get a new bucket.
America is sinking fast. At least that is what I hear from all of the pundits in the media and on the net. My observations tend to support their prognostications.
It is not something new, the degeneration of America, but it does seem to be approaching the sound-barrier-busting speed under the current gaggle of “lawmakers” currently occupying the good ship Washington.
But much like “dear Henry” they are never able to fix the bucket. In fact, it seems that the more solutions they come up with, the faster the water rushes in..
Although we were never told why our friend Henry needed a bucket in the first place, it would be safe to assume that today we need the bucket in order to bail water from the sinking ship.
As a man wiser than me once advised me, “when you find yourself in a hole the first thing you need to do is stop digging.”
I got his point, but equally important was the need to identify the problem and fix it.
I wonder if Liza every asked Henry what caused the hole in the bucket in the first place?
Temporary fixes do not lead to permanent solutions. Even if Henry could have plugged the hole, eventually the leak would return.
That is a microcosm of America. We treat symptoms not problems.
The monkey grinders in Washington think the answer to gun violence is more gun laws. Perhaps in Henry’s day the government solution would have been to eliminate buckets. No buckets, no holes. It seems like a perfect solution until Henry or Liza has the need for water.
Outlawing buckets will never stop leaks. Only “government experts” think that way. Treating symptoms does not cure the disease; it merely controls it…regulates it, if you will.
Condoms don’t prevent pregnancies. They merely deceive one into believing that they can. When a condom is misused…or fails…we do not outlaw condoms. We simply adjust and work to improve the way in which one can have sex without consequences. Some call it abortion.
The same holds true in pornography. Although our nation is ravaged with the effects of an overdose of skin-exposure our solution is not the elimination of porn, but rather, condoms on our computers. Filters are what we call them. Filters don’t work for cigarettes; they don’t work for sex; and they don’t work for porn. They only sure way to reduce the viewing of porn is to eliminate its availability.
The good ship America is sinking because there is a hole in her hull. Appealing to dear Liza for the solution is not going to bring the cure.
So here we are on the verge of another election, pacing back and forth over the need to change the rascals in Washington. Painting the bucket will not plug the leak. Handing the bucket to Uncle Mitt rather than to Uncle Barak will not keep us from sinking.
If we have any hoping of bringing this ship to safe harbor we are going to have to repair the leaks. Merely getting a new captain will not do the trick.
Look folks, it is time we took the time to diagnosis the problem so we can apply the medication.
Our ship has holes in it. Perhaps it is time we asked how they got there.
Both Republicans and Democrats have punched holes in the boat. It is just that each group uses a different sized drill bit.
It was a Republican President who gave us the Patriot Act. It was a Republican President who gave us government-paid prescription drug benefits. It was a Republican Supreme Court that gave us Roe V Wade. It was a Republican appointee who validated Obama Care. It was a Republican that eliminated the Gold Standard as the foundation of sound money. It was a Republican who gave America no-fault divorce. It was a Republican who bogged us down in a ten-year-and-counting military boondoggle in the Middle East.
The Republicans just aren’t as reckless as the leftists. The use small drill bits so that our sinking is much more gradual. But the certainty of capsizing is just as sure.
Watch this 10 second scene from the movie Titanic. “It is a mathematical certainty…”
The Democrats, on the other hand, simply use bigger drill bits. Social Security, The Great Society, Obama Care, Illegal Immigration, were all Democratic well-drilling operations. Their programs merely drill bigger holes which causes the ship to sink faster
But admit it. The ship is taking on water. Merely changing drillers will not save our ship.
There’s a hole in the bucket. It is time to abandon ship and return to solid ground.
Christianity is that solid ground.
Can we be honest with ourselves? Can we look ourselves in the mirror and admit that the issues taking us under are the very issues only Christianity can address. Laws cannot control man. Only God can control man. It is time we returned to Jesus.
America flourished as a Christian-based culture until the second-half of the twentieth century.
With a common value system, built on a common set of beliefs, this nation was a beacon to the world. Because we failed to fight for what our fore-fathers held dear, the rudderless ship journeyed off course. One by one they drilled holes in the boat…removal of prayer from schools…Bible reading in schools…abortion…sodomy…porn…each drilling a hole in the bottom of the boat.
Not one sane-thinking person in America could say that America is better today than it was in 1950. Not really, not in values…not in the things that really make America strong.
Oh, we may have more, but much of what we have is of such little value. We have gained the world and lost our souls.
We must return to what made us great.
But that won’t happen without the church. And the church will not move without the shepherds. And the shepherds will not move without some prodding. And the prodding will not work if you possess no courage. And courage can only be developed in the heat of the battle.
For such a time as this…the time to act is now.
Everywhere I look I see God-fearing people working the ship, plugging holes with their fingers, calling for more help to bail out the rapidly rising waves.
But the pastors are in the bottom of the boat…riding out the storm. A return to a common system of ethics built on Biblical values is the only chance this nation has. Our pastors must show some courage and lead. Someone needs to shake them and waken them.
Say what you will about the secularists…and the atheists…and the humanists. At least they believe enough in their false gods to force their belief system on others. They control our schools…they control the media…they control the entertainment industry… they control the church…they control the home.
The silence of the pastors on the issues that truly matter have left us a nation adrift. They serve an all-powerful God but are afraid to stand up and boldly speak for Him.
I have heard many tell me that politics has no place in the church. That may be true, but isn’t it time the pulpit got involved with the politics? When we leave the running of the government to the enemies of Christ why should we be surprised when the ship springs leaks?
It is time to build an ark. The system is broken. There is a hole in the bucket.
